Scheme - Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is a flagship scheme of the Government of India launched to address declining Child Sex Ratio, promote survival and protection of the girl child and encourage education and empowerment of girls. The scheme focuses on awareness generation, behaviour change, prevention of gender-biased sex selection, improvement in enrolment and retention of girls in education and creation of an enabling environment for girls to grow with dignity and equal opportunity.

Implementation: The scheme is implemented through State Governments, Union Territory Administrations, District Administrations, local bodies, schools, health institutions, Anganwadi Centres and community-levelinstitutions.

Benefits Offered Under the Scheme

The key benefits offered under the scheme include:

  • 1. Awareness and advocacy: Campaigns are conducted to promote the value of the girl child and discourage gender discrimination.
  • 2. Prevention of gender-biased sex selection: The scheme supports enforcement of laws against illegal sex determination and female foeticide.
  • 3. Promotion of girl child education: Activities are undertaken to improve enrolment, attendance and retention of girls in schools.
  • 4. Community mobilisation: Local campaigns, rallies, school events, Gram Sabha meetings and public awareness drives are organised.
  • 5. Convergence with related schemes: Beneficiaries are linked with schemes related to education, health, nutrition, safety and financial inclusion.
  • 6. Improved health and nutrition focus: The scheme promotes better health care, immunisation, nutrition and institutional support for girls.
  • 7. Support for adolescent girls: Awareness activities may cover menstrual hygiene, life skills, safety, education and career aspirations.
  • 8. Gender sensitisation: Parents, teachers, frontline workers, local leaders and communities are sensitised on gender equality.
  • 9. District-level action planning: Districts prepare and implement local action plans to improve indicators related to girls.
  • 10. No direct cash transfer: BBBP is mainly an awareness, advocacy and convergence - based scheme. It does not provide direct individual cash assistance under the core scheme.

Eligibility

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is not a direct individual-benefit scheme with a standard beneficiary application process. It is implemented at community, district and institutional levels. General coverage includes:

  • Girl children across India.
  • Adolescent girls, school-going girls and girls at risk of dropping out.
  • Parents and families of girlchildren.
  • Pregnant women and mothers, through health and awareness activities.
  • Schools, Anganwadi Centres, health institutions and community groups.
  • Districts and local areas requiring improvement in gender indicators such as sex ratio at birth, education and protection of girls.
  • Communities where awareness and behaviour change on gender equality are required.

Where to apply:

There is generally no direct application process for individual benefits under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. Citizens may contact the following institutions for information, participation or convergence with related schemes:

  • District Women and Child Development Office
  • District Programme Officer
  • Block Development Office
  • Child Development Project Officer
  • Anganwadi Centre
  • Schoolor education department office
  • District Education Office
  • District Health Office
  • Gram Panchayat or Urban LocalBody
  • Common Service Centre, where related scheme applications are available

How to apply / process

  • 1. Since BBBP is primarily an awareness and convergence scheme, individual application is generally not required.
  • 2. Families, girls and community members may participate in awareness programmes, school campaigns, health camps and community mobilisation activities organised under the scheme.
  • 3. If a girl child requires support for education, health, nutrition, safety or financial inclusion, the family may approach the relevant local office for linkage with applicable schemes.
  • 4. For education-related support, parents may contact the school, District Education Office or State scholarshipportall.
  • 5. For health, nutrition or Anganwadi-related support, the family may contact the Anganwadi Centre, ASHA worker, ANM or health facility.
  • 6. For protection-related concerns such as child marriage, abuse, trafficking or violence, the family or community may contact the Childline helpline, District Child Protection Unit, police or local administration.
  • 7. For girl child savings, families may open a Sukanya Samriddhi Account at a post office or authorised bank.
  • 8. Local authorities may include eligible girls and families in relevant government schemes through convergence based on need and eligibility.
  • 9. Citizens may also raise awareness, report illegal sex determination or participate in local BBBP activities through district-level platforms.
