Salient Features of the Scheme

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched by the Government of India on 15th February 2024, aims to promote rooftop solar adoption among residential consumers. The scheme seeks to benefit one crore households across the country by enabling them to generate clean solar power and reduce electricity expenses. Eligible consumers can avail Central Financial Assistance (CFA) of up to Rs 78,000 for installation of rooftop solar systems. The subsidy is transferred directly to the beneficiary's bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Target Beneficiaries and Eligibility Criteria

  • The scheme is available to any residential consumers having a valid domestic electricity connection. Applicants must be Indian citizens, own a residential house with suitable rooftop space for solar installation, and should not have previously availed subsidy for the same rooftop solar system.
  • Group Housing Societies (GHS), Residential Welfare Associations (RWA), Apartment Owners Associations (AOA), and Cooperative Housing Societies are also eligible for installation of rooftop solar systems for common facilities, subject to applicable guidelines.

Procedure and Mechanism for Availing Benefits

  • Interested consumers may apply online through the National Portal for Rooftop Solar(www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in). Applicants are required to register using their electricity consumer number, select a vendor empanelled by the distribution utility, and obtain necessary technical approvals. After installation and inspection of the rooftop solar system, net metering is enabled and subsidy is credited directly to the beneficiary's bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Required documents generally include electricity bill, identity proof, bank account details, and proof of ownership/occupancy of the premises.

  • The scheme promotes energy self-reliance and long-term savings for households through clean and sustainable power generation.DISCOMS play a key rolle in approvals and grid integration. Beneficiaries can significantly reduce their electricity expenses while contributing to environmental conservation. Additionally, beneficiaries can generate surplus energy and earn through net metering. In West Bengal, implementation is being facilitated through the State's distribution utilities and designated agencies in coordination with the Government of India. Consumers are advised to engage only approved vendors and follow the prescribed procedure on the National Portal to ensure timely processing of applications and subsidy disbursement.
