Onion Storage

Onion Storage

Onion production is steadily increasing in our state to bridge up the gap between the consumers requirement of onion vis- a-vis actual production volume. 2 South Bengal districts, viz. Murshidabad and Nadia have produced approx 4.00 lakh MT onion this year, which is an achievement in itself.

However, Hardening of Onion price from July onward is a regular phenomenon in our state because our local production gets exhausted by that time. Hence, special attention has been provided in helping farmers to store freshly harvested onion and garlic during March April to enable them avoid distressed cell when the price is lower and sale it from June July onwards to avail the higher prices. To fulfil the objective following steps have been taken :-

  • 4000 small size Onion Storage Structures (OSS) have been constructed all over the state with the cumulative capacity of 36,000 metric ton to provide farmers the scope of storage of their own onion produce
  • 8 big size Onion Storage Structures (OSS) have been constructed in the districts of Purba Bardhaman, Hoogly, Murshidabad, Nadia and Malda under jurisdiction of the concerned Zilla Regulated Market Committees and farmers have already stored their freshly harvested onion produce there
  • Sufal bangla is regularly procuring onion and garlic from the farmers at remunerative prices seling it directly to the consumers through its 649 mobile and static outlets at reasonable prices
